West of the town there is an inland dune in the forest of Speyer. The area is owned by the German military and was used for miltary exercises when there were soldiers stationed in Speyer. Today the area is mainly used for recreation, but this is endangeringe the unique flora and fauna here.
In 2023 the German military has closed down all public access to the area and announced that there will be military excercises again here. This is obviously a reaction to the war in the Ukraine.
